Report: Newcastle 3 Cardiff 0

first_imgFabian Schar was Newcastle United’s surprise hero as his double earned a 3-0 home win over Cardiff City and moved Rafael Benitez’s men out of the Premier League bottom three.Defender Schar, in the team as Rafael Benitez’s only change from last week’s loss to Chelsea, had not scored since November 2017 while playing for Deportivo La Coruna, but produced a crucial double on Saturday. He netted in both halves and Ayoze Perez put the icing on the cake in stoppage-time, meaning Newcastle move back out of the drop zone after dropping into it last weekend. They are replaced in the relegation places by a poor Cardiff side who did not even register a shot on target until the 72nd minute.@fabianschaer at the double! @NUFC #NEWCAR pic.twitter.com/dXUgf2J7Is— Premier League (@premierleague) January 19, 2019Newcastle made the stronger start, with Perez’s header impressively tipped over by Neil Etheridge, before the forward had a penalty claim turned down for handball against Joe Bennett. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? The breakthrough arrived after 24 minutes, and it was not a goal you would expect from a centre-back. Schar collected a pass from Isaac Hayden 40 yards from goal, beat Cardiff debutant Oumar Niasse, ran completely unchallenged into the box and stroked a cool left-footed effort into the far corner from 12 yards.Victor Camarasa unleashed a powerful strike that had Martin Dubravka briefly worried before flying over, but the visitors did not muster a first-half shot on target.Perez was foiled by Etheridge again early in the second period, the goalkeeper saving at close range as the Spaniard stayed on his feet despite coming under heavy pressure from Bennett. But Newcastle were not to be denied in the 63rd minute, Schar converting from inside the six-yard box after latching on to a headed flick on from defensive colleague Jamaal Lascelles, who had met Matt Ritchie’s corner.Schar even had a chance for a hat-trick, heading narrowly wide from another Ritchie delivery shortly before making a key interception at the other end.Bruno Ecuele Manga’s header ensured Dubravka was finally tested for the first time, but Cardiff never threatened a comeback and Perez tapped in three minutes into added time after superb work from Salomon Rondon to set him up.FULL-TIME Newcastle 3-0 CardiffFabian Schar scores twice and Ayoze Perez adds a third to lift @NUFC out of the bottom 3 and above their visitors #NEWCAR pic.twitter.com/qHjaDBuKzy— Premier League (@premierleague) January 19, 2019What does it mean? Vital home boost for NewcastleAs well as moving out of the relegation zone, a home win was vital for Newcastle’s morale after a tough campaign at St James’ Park. They had only two wins and seven goals from 11 home league games coming into the match, but Benitez will hope this can change the momentum in their battle against the drop.Cardiff had only lost once in four games coming into the match, keeping three clean sheets, but an abject display at both ends of the pitch sees them seeking answers once again, with only one win from 11 matches on the road.Supreme Schar lifts Newcastle moodSchar’s two goals were very different – with his second more scrappy than the excellent first – but he will not care. He also helped Newcastle to a valuable clean sheet, registering five clearances. Not good from NiasseNiasse did not have the Cardiff debut he would have hoped for. While he was not signed for his defensive qualities, he failed to track Schar for the opener, and at the other end he did not register a shot or create a chance for his team-mates before being replaced by Bobby Reid after Newcastle’s second goal. He only touched the ball once in Newcastle’s box.Key Opta Facts- Newcastle have won their last 10 home league games against Cardiff – only against Bolton have they had a longer run in their history (11 between 1898 and 1914).- Newcastle scored three goals in a Premier League game for the first time this season, last doing so against Chelsea on the final day of the 2017-18 campaign.- Cardiff have failed to score in a league-high 11 different Premier League games this season.- Schar became the first defender to score twice in a Premier League for Newcastle since Philippe Albert against Manchester City in February 1996.What’s next?Newcastle are on FA Cup duty next Saturday with a home tie against Watford, before a daunting home clash against Manchester City on January 29, which is the same day as Cardiff return to action with an away top-flight game against Arsenal – not an ideal fixture as they look to provide an answer to this poor performance. read morelast_img read more

FFA outlines plans for second tier

first_imgFootball Federation Australia (FFA) has outlined plans for a national second division below the A-League, which would potentially come into effect in 2021-22.A-League sides do not face relegation in the existing format but could in future after FFA released details of its plan to work towards a second tier. Its aim is to form a league that would be “financially sustainable and provide professional pathways for more Australian players”. FFA director Remo Nogarotto acknowledged the introduction of promotion and relegation would have to be discussed, although it could prove a contentious issue.”If a second-tier competition in the purest form is the objective – one that not only opens up a new pathway for talented footballers but also differentiates our game from other football codes – then a system of promotion and relegation should be considered over the longer term,” he said.A committee comprised of the FFA chairman Chris Nikou, two member federations, two representatives of the Association of Australian Football Clubs, one from Professional Footballers Australia and one from an A-League club will be established and report back to the FFA board by the end of November.last_img read more

Bradford City vs Liverpool: Team news & preview

Darby, the husband of England women captain Steph Houghton, came through the youth setup at Liverpool and made more than 200 appearances for Bradford in a five-year spell. With both clubs less than a month away from the start of their respective seasons, it will be another chance to work up fitness and integrate squad players into the first-team fold in front of an expected sell-out crowd at Valley Parade. He set up the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation with close friend Chris Rimmer, and was boosted earlier this month by the announcement of an official partnership between the Foundation and Bradford City.A sell-out crowd is expected for this game, an achievement that Bantams manager Gary Bowyer says speaks volumes about the affection in which Darby is held.“We are really looking forward to Sunday,” he told the club’s website. It is for an unbelievable cause and we are delighted to be hosting Liverpool. The players are understandably excited about the occasion – in front of a 24,000-plus crowd.“The fact this fixture sold out in a matter of weeks tells you a great deal. It is an appreciation and a measure of the impact Stephen had on the Bradford City fanbase.“He displayed the qualities in a Bradford shirt that we are looking to bring in now. I feel we have done. The fact the supporters are turning out in their droves doesn’t surprise me at all.”Liverpool showed their admiration for Darby on Twitter, with a video showing the squad chanting his name after James Milner was nominated for the #StephenDarbyBaby challenge. They also hoped to raise some awareness for the #DistanceForDarbs day, where participants will walk the 65km from Valley Parade to Anfield to raise awareness for the foundation. After being nominated for the #StephenDarbyBaby challenge, @JamesMilner called in some backing singers, in support of @Distance_Darbs – @darbyrimmermnd. 🎤Our nomination is everyone attending our game vs @officialbantams tomorrow. Liverpool have a taste for trophies – Oxlade-Chamberlain

first_imgAlex Oxlade-Chamberlain says Liverpool have a “taste of winning” and are determined to add to their Champions League crown now that they know “what’s required” to land major silverware.Jurgen Klopp ended a seven-year barren spell for the Reds in 2018-19 as he guided them to European glory.A UEFA Super Cup triumph has already been added to the roll of honour this season, having suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield. Ox-rated! Dream night in Genk for Liverpool ace after injury nightmare Messi a man for all Champions League seasons – but will this really be Barcelona’s? Liverpool still have Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Club World Cup quests to come, with Oxlade-Chamberlain determined to get his hands on more medals. The England international told the Reds’ official website: “We’ve had a taste of winning [a trophy] and we knew what it took to get there.”It was nowhere near easy. I think it’s going to get harder and harder.”We know what it’s going to take, there are going to be moments that test us and maybe new tests this year that we didn’t face last year.”We had to dig in, the boys dug in all last year through difficult moments, where you’re expected to win and still go out and win. We know there’s going to be tests and we know that’s what’s required.”Oxlade-Chamberlain, who made his return to action towards the end of last season following a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a serious knee injury, believes all of the pieces are coming together at Anfield for sustained success to be enjoyed. The 26-year-old midfielder added: “Mentally, this group of players is top drawer. The manager is one of the most mentally persistent managers out there, for sure, he keeps us going.”We know what the demands are on each other. And I think that has grown in the team, there are more and more leaders coming out of this side – not just Hendo, Millie, Virg. Everyone is starting to take responsibility for what they need to do on and off the ball.”It’s a team that’s really going in the right direction. But it’s early in the season; we’ve got to keep our feet on the ground, keep plugging away and keep churning out results.”Liverpool have taken maximum points from their two Premier League games in 2019-20 and will be looking to make it three wins from three when they play host to an Arsenal side on Saturday that has also been faultless so far. The Delhi franchise, playing their first home of the season, have new owners, new name, new logo and a new jersey. But in the seventh over of the CSK innings, Shane Watson hit a massive six of Amit Mishra so much so the ball got lost in the crowd at the Kotla. As the players and umpires waited patiently for the ball to be returned, the fans in the stadium could not not find it themselves.Even when a policeman’s intervention could not help retrieve the ball, the umpires had no other option but call for a new ball.IPL 2019: DC vs CSKThe incident happened on the fourth ball of the over, as Watson launched the ball into orbit once again for the second six of the over.6.5 Overs, A. The dismissal help Delhi get a foot in as CSK were looking comfotable of their chase of 148. Ealier, the Capitals were restricted for a sub-par 147/6 as Dwayne Bravo picked up 3 wickets for 33 from his 4 overs. With the ball stopping and coming, Capitals batsmen found Bravo’s variations difficult to handle. Ravindra Jadeja (1/23 in 4 overs) also made life difficult for the Capitals in the middle overs and Harbhajan Singh (0/30 in 4 overs) also bowled as many as 10 dot balls.advertisementDhawan, however, continued to hold one end up and hit the occasional boundary in between, even as stroke making became increasingly difficult.Pant (25 off 12 balls), during his 41-run stand with Dhawan, tried to negate the pitch factor but did not last till the death overs. He did reach out to a short ball from Harbhajan, dispatching it over long off for a six. In the next over, his short arm pull off Dwayne Bravo was taken by Shardul Thakur at deep square leg boundary. With Colin Ingram (2) and Keemo Paul (0) also being dismissed cheaply, followed by Dhawan, the expectations of a 175-plus total withered away. Also Read | Started to doubt myself after Koffee with Karan row, I was hated nationally: KL RahulFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. first_imgPlaying IPL comes closest to playing World Cup: KXIP’s Hardus ViljoenKings XI Punjab pacer Hardus Viljoen said playing IPL is the closest to playing the World Cup as “you get to play against the best”.advertisement Indo-Asian News Service New DelhiApril 10, 2019UPDATED: April 10, 2019 19:50 IST Hardus believes IPL is better than many other T20 leagues in the world (IANS photo)HIGHLIGHTSKXIP’s Hardus Viljoen cannot play for South Africa as had accepted the Kolpak dealHardus believes IPL is better than many other T20 leagues in the world. The bowler however feels the T20 format is tailor-made for batsmenKings XI Punjab pacer Hardus Viljoen cannot play for South Africa as had accepted the Kolpak deal, but he feels playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) comes closest to fulfilling his dream of playing in the coveted World Cup.The Kolpak deal allows citizens of around 100 nations to play cricket in any EU nation without being considered an overseas player. Hardus had donned the national jersey once in a Test against England and is now a freelance cricketer.Hardus believes IPL is better than many other T20 leagues in the world. Speaking to IANS, Hardus said the level of competition makes the cash-rich Indian league stand out.”IPL is closest to the World Cup as you get to play against the best. It is an unbelievable experience for players as it adds an international flavour,” he said.Hardus signed the Kolpak deal with English county Derbyshire before ending it in January 2019.Asked about his move to play in the English County, Hardus said, ”Every boy dreams to play for his country, but this is all about opportunities. You were dropped just after the one Test. You could not get the chance to show your skills and what are you capable of.””For me, to take this decision after getting dropped was difficult. But everything happens for a reason. At the end of the day you need security in life and food on your table for your family. Kolpak improved me as a player also,” he said.Playing for KXIP, Hardus feels (Ravichandran) Ashwin understands his players.advertisement”I have played with a lot of captains. I would say Darren Sammy was probably the best captain I played under. Ashwin falls in the same category,” he said.”He knows what to expect from me and I exactly know what I need to do in different situations and this makes it easier. When your captain believes in you and trusts you, it makes your job easier,” Viljoen added.A well-known name in T20 cricket, the bowler feels the format is tailor-made for batsmen.”In T20 cricket, public wants to see runs and we as bowlers need to restrict the batsmen. I think focusing on the basics makes the job easier,” he said. Also Read | IPL not ideal yardstick, but little choice left for India selectors ahead of World CupAlso Read | Will not consider IPL performances for World Cup selection: MSK PrasadAlso Watch | Great to have someone like Chris Gayle in KXIP: KL RahulFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. At the end we can say that this season was very good for us,” Lewandowski said.Bayern winger Franck Ribery, who is leaving Munich along with Arjen Robben, came on as a late substitute to make a record eighth German Cup final appearance in his last game for the club. Also Read | Ernesto Valverde vows to continue as Barcelona season fizzles outAlso Watch:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports. The 2019 iPhones are likely to follow the suit of their predecessors and include three smartphone models called the iPhone 11, the iPhone 11 Max and the iPhone 11R. In the past couple of months, a steady stream of rumours has already given us a fair idea as to what should be expected from Apple this year. And now adding to that stream is a series of CAD renders that gives us yet another glimpse of the upcoming iPhone 11.The new CAD renders come as a courtesy of Slash Leaks which shared the images of the upcoming iPhone XI, the iPhone XI Max and the iPhone XIR online. The new images show the upcoming three phones sporting a multi-camera setup at the back that is housed inside a squared shaped camera bump that is placed on the top right quadrant of three iPhones – something that we have seen consistently over the course of reviews in the past.To get down to the specifics, the CAD renders indicate that the iPhone XI and the iPhone XI Max, that will succeed the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max, will come with a triple camera setup and flash at the back, while the iPhone XIR, that will succeed the iPhone XR will come with a dual rear camera setup with a flash. The three iPhones – as has been pointed out by several reports in the past – are likely to retain the notch that will house multiple sensors, including the front camera, and the earpiece. In addition to this, the three images also indicate the presence of a speaker grille at the bottom along with the lightning port.advertisementSadly, the CAD renders do not reveal more details about the three iPhones.
