Ms. Joseph officially joined the staff at the Dominica Site on Thursday, December 15, 2011. According to the Head of UWI Open Campus, Dominica, Dr. Francis O. Severin, the institution’s decision to establish the position was both necessary and timely. Dr. Severin said, “We can no longer take for granted that students will apply to the UWI because of our established quality.” He added, “Indeed, in their anxiety to secure credentials as part of the ‘diploma diseases’,’shoppers for education’ may unfortunately be misled by attractive brochures and the ‘foreign is better’ myth. Our new Marketing and Outreach Officer will, among other things, clarify in the minds of prospective students our outstanding quality.”Ms. Joseph’s speciality is in communications, marketing and public relations at educational institutions. She obtained her BA in Mass Communication (summa cum laude) from the School of Communication at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh (SUNY Plattsburgh) in 2004. She received her MA in Communications Studies with distinction from the Institute of Communications Studies at the University of Leeds, UK in 2011. During her undergraduate years, Ms. Joseph interned and later worked with the Office of Public Relations and Alumni Relations at SUNY Plattsburgh. During the interval of her studies, she was Head of English at Convent High School. Dr. Severin believes that Ms. Joseph’s education and experience will prove valuable to UWI Open Campus, Dominica’s vision for the provision of tertiary education on the island. “The Open Campus emerged out of an expressed need by many of the UWI stakeholders in countries which did not have physical campuses, to offer a greater variety and level of programmes that would reach the under-served,” said Dr. Severin, “Ms. Joseph has the skills to help the Open Campus meet the people where they are.”Dominica Vibes Newslast_img
